​Engaging the Crusades is a series of volumes which offer windows into a newly emerging field of historical study: the memory and legacy of the crusades. Together these volumes examine the reasons behind the enduring resonance of the crusades and present the memory of crusading in the modern period as a productive, exciting and much needed area of investigation.
 
As a flagship for Routledge’s Focus range, Engaging the Crusades volumes are short (50,000-word) edited collections of essays and monographs. The three-month, print-on-demand format allows authors to respond quickly to trends in scholarship and to rapidly and effectively communicate with their audiences.
 
The series is edited by Professor Jonathan Phillips, who is Professor of the History of the Crusades at Royal Holloway, University of London, and Dr Mike Horswell, author of The Rise and Fall of British Crusader Medievalism, c. 1825-1945.

CALL  FOR  PROPOSALS

The editors welcome proposals for further volumes in the series, whether edited collections or monographs. Equally, proposals for individual chapters which may fit one of the calls below, or on the series theme more generally, would be welcome: 

• The academic memory of the crusades as reflected in crusade historiography;
• The cultural impact and memory of crusading of recipients of crusades – e.g. Muslims, Middle Eastern peoples, Baltic territories, Orthodox Christians, etc;
• The legacy and use of the crusades in politics and international relations;
• The physical heritage of the crusades and crusading;
• National memories of the crusades or crusaders, or use of crusading rhetoric or imagery;
• Popular images of the crusades and crusading; whether literary, artistic, entertainment or pastimes;
• Theoretical dimensions of crusader medievalism and collective memory;
• Religious reflections, refractions and re-purposing of the crusades;
• Material memories - the modern history of crusader objects or collections;
• Representations of the crusades in art, literature, computer games, or other media;
• Groups for whom crusading or the crusades form a central aspect of their identity, informing their purpose and self-expression – e.g. modern military orders or chivalric associations
• Crusader dreams – crusade proposals (however practical), fantasies and counterfactual histories;
• Constructing the crusades in encyclopaedias in European languages and online;
• Other aspects of the modern memory, legacy or use of the crusades or crusading.
  

Proposals will need to be made to and approved by Routledge directly, but the editors will recommend appropriate volumes for publication to the appropriate board.
