CRUSADER MEDIEVALISMThe crusades were a cultural phenomenon long after they ceased to be a viable proposition for Western nations; the echoes of the medieval crusading movement continue to reverberate today due to a perception of their continued relevance to contemporary events. In both Western and Islamic discourses the crusades have played a prominent role – often symbolising Western intervention, colonial oppression, or national destiny – providing a shorthand for Christian holy warfare and a reference point for the ‘clash of the civilisations’ theory of cultural conflict.
Crusader medievalism is an umbrella term for the reception, use and reuse of the crusades and crusading and includes the study of modern employment of crusading rhetoric and imagery. This site is a showcase for the study of how crusading rhetoric and imagery has been employed in the past two centuries, notably in the fields of politics, education and the arts. It will point to upcoming conferences and useful resources for scholars and the wider public alike. |
